Stick Fighting in Eight Systems — The Weapon Every Culture Had
Eight cultures, one weapon, no common root. The decisive question: is the stick a stick — or does it stand in for a blade?

Overview
There is no second weapon like it. Swords require metallurgy, bows require craft, spears need at least a point. A stick is lying on the ground. Which is why every culture that ever fought at all eventually developed a system for it — independently, on every continent, without contact.
That makes stick fighting the closest thing to a controlled experiment that martial arts history has to offer. Same tool, same human anatomy, same physics — and eight mutually independent answers. Whatever shows up in all eight is probably forced by the thing itself. Whatever shows up in only one is culture.
This article places eight systems side by side: bōjutsu (Japan), escrima (Philippines), canne de combat (France), silambam (Tamil Nadu), krabi-krabong (Thailand), gatka (Punjab), Nguni stick fighting (southern Africa) and tahtib (Egypt).
And it has a thesis that cuts across every national border. It is not “which stick fighting is best”, but:

That single question divides the eight systems more cleanly than any geography. It determines where the strikes go, what the second hand does, and why some sticks have a hand guard and others do not.

How to spot it — the hand guard
The gatka soti usually has a hand guard. At first glance that is a quirk; at second glance it is the most revealing piece of evidence in the whole comparison.
Because what does a stick need a hand guard for? A stick rarely hits the hand to decisive effect — it is a small, mobile target. A blade, on the other hand, makes the hand the single most rewarding target there is: it is the foremost part of the body, it holds the weapon, and one hit ends the fight immediately. A system that designs around the hand guard is thinking in blades — even when there is wood in the hand right now.
The same thing shows up in the Philippines from the other direction. Escrima teaches the principle of attacking the weapon hand first. That makes limited sense with a 70 cm rattan stick and perfect sense with a bolo — and that is exactly the point: in the Filipino systems the rattan stick is explicitly the training substitute for the bladed weapons, not the weapon proper. The espada is the original, the olisi the translation.
Gatka says it even more plainly: the soti is meant to simulate the talwar, the curved sabre of the Punjab.
The other half
Bōjutsu, silambam, tahtib and Nguni stick fighting stand in for nothing. There, the stick is the weapon.
That has visible consequences. These systems aim for mass and momentum rather than cut and angle: at head, torso and joints, with a tool that works by sheer inertia. A 180 cm hardwood staff needs no edge; it needs leverage and a path. Hence the movements are large, circular and two-handed — the opposite of the small, blade-shaped angles of the Filipino systems.
Krabi-krabong is the interesting borderline case. The name names both: krabi is the sword (daab, approx. 90 cm), krabong the long staff. The system therefore carries the dividing line not between itself and others but within itself — which makes it the best place to study the difference, because the same practitioners wield both.
Canne de combat — the third case
The French canne fits neither box, and that is what makes it the most instructive of the eight.
It stands in for no blade. It stands in for a walking cane — the object a nineteenth-century townsman carried anyway. And the competition stick has dimensions that explain everything: 95 cm, 100 to 125 grams, chestnut, tapered, with neither pommel nor ferrule.
A hundred grams. That is the weight of a bar of chocolate. A stick like that cannot reliably incapacitate anyone — and is not meant to. The canne has become a touch-scoring sport, a cousin of the foil: what counts is the clean, telegraphed hit, not its effect. Hence the free hand behind the back as in fencing, hence the bounding, wide-ranging footwork.
Anyone who compares the canne to the bō and calls it “weaker” has confused the yardstick. It answers a different question.
The three adjusting screws
1. Length
It decides the range, and thereby everything else.
- Over 150 cm (bō, silambam, tahtib, ubhoko): two-handed, wide arcs, the staff is also thrust and pushed. At close range it becomes a lever and a barrier, no longer a striking tool.
- 90 to 110 cm (canne, gatka, daab, induku): one-handed. This is the length at which a human can still move a weapon quickly and place the tip precisely — not coincidentally the length of most one-handed swords as well.
- Under 75 cm (escrima): very short, and therefore often doubled. Range is not produced by the weapon but by footwork — which is why escrima has the most elaborate range system of the eight (largo, medio, corto).
2. Weight
It predicts what is supposed to happen on impact.

Rattan is a decision of its own here: it does not splinter, it frays. That is not material poverty but the precondition for training at full contact.
3. What the second hand does
This is where the eight diverge most, and the answer betrays the threat picture.
- On the same staff (bōjutsu, silambam, tahtib): the staff needs both hands. There is no second weapon because the first occupies the whole person.
- A second stick (Nguni): one stick strikes, one parries — induku and ubhoko have separate jobs, sometimes supplemented by a small rawhide shield. Splitting attack and defence across two tools is unusual among the eight and extraordinarily efficient.
- A shield (gatka): the farri handles the defence. Blade logic again — against sticks a shield is a luxury, against sabres it is everything.
- A second weapon, or free (escrima): double stick, stick and dagger, or the live hand, which grabs, controls and strikes.
- Behind the back (canne): out of the way. A pure sporting stance that shrinks the target area.
What converges — and what does not
The interesting part of the experiment.
Everywhere
The diagonal. All eight systems build their basic repertoire around oblique strikes from upper right to lower left and back. That is not transmission but anatomy: humans have two arms with a spine between them, and the most powerful line this construction produces is the diagonal. Anyone starting from zero finds it inevitably.
The circular motion. Whether the moulinet in France, the circling guides of tahtib or the figure-eights of the Filipino systems — everywhere the same solution serves the same problem: a stick that stops after a strike has to be accelerated again. A stick that keeps travelling is already on its way to the next hit.
The head as the primary target. With a weapon that works by momentum, the skull offers the best ratio of effort to effect.
Only where the culture calls for it
The hand guard — only where a blade stands behind it.
Grappling with the stick — levers, throws and traps with the staff occur in bōjutsu, escrima and gatka, and not at all in the sporting canne. They are not a physical necessity but a question of rules.
The second stick — the Nguni solution of distributing attack and defence across two tools is obvious and nevertheless rare. A good example of convergence not levelling everything after all.
The ritual framing. Tahtib and Nguni stick fighting are today substantially social practice — festival, test of courage, dispute settlement, dance. That is not dilution but, in both cases, a very old function that has always accompanied the martial one.
What this means for your own training
Ask the blade question first. Someone coming from escrima who picks up a bō brings angles designed for a tool that cuts. Conversely, a bōjutsuka swings arcs with a rattan stick that are far too large. Both errors have the same cause: the weapon was changed but not the logic.
Length changes everything, weight even more. A 95 cm stick at 120 grams and a 95 cm stick at 700 grams are not the same weapon. Anyone transferring techniques between systems must first check whether their tool has the inertia the technique assumes.
The diagonal is the common denominator. Learn it cleanly in one system and it transfers everywhere. Everything beyond it is tied to the weapon and the rule set.
Full contact needs the right material. Rattan frays, hardwood splinters. That is why the Filipino systems can train at an intensity that would be indefensible with an oak staff.
Common fallacies
“The longest stick wins.” The legend of Musashi and Musō Gonnosuke tells exactly the opposite story, and physics agrees: a long staff is superior at range and a burden up close. Length is a trade, not an advantage.
“Canne de combat isn’t real stick fighting.” It is a sport with a 100-gram stick, and it says so itself. The charge only lands if you impute to it a goal it does not have — it descends from the walking cane, not from the battlefield.
“Escrima stick techniques are stick techniques.” They are blade techniques executed with a stick. Read them as stick fighting and you will wonder why so much effort goes into the opponent’s hand.
“The similarities prove a common origin.” The commonest fallacy in weapon comparisons. The diagonal and the circular motion appear everywhere because everywhere the same two arms hold the same stick — not because someone travelled. Convergence is no proof of kinship.
How far this comparison can be pushed
Unlike the roundhouse kick, where a controlled measurement across three systems exists, there is no comparative study of stick fighting. What stands side by side here has been assembled from the individual systems: from their documented dimensions, rule books and training practices.
The measurements are solid because they are standardised — the 95 cm and 100 to 125 grams of the competition canne are in the regulations, the 91 to 107 cm of the soti are the customary build. The classification “stands in for a blade”, by contrast, is an assessment, not a measurement. It rests on the fact that the systems concerned say so themselves: the soti is meant to simulate the talwar, and in the Filipino systems the rattan stick explicitly stands in place of the bladed weapons.
