Vasili Oshchepkov — the founder who was deleted

This encyclopedia collects invented origins. Oshchepkov is the opposite case — a documented founder removed from the history of his own art.

Overview

Vasili Sergeyevich Oshchepkov was the first Russian to earn a black belt at the Kodokan, and one of the two men out of whose work Sambo grew. In 1937 he was arrested in the Great Purge as a Japanese spy and died in custody. After that his name disappeared from the history of the sport he had founded — completely for twenty years, and in the official account for far longer.

This encyclopedia has recorded a whole series of invented origins: Bodhidharma as the forefather of Shaolin, Yue Fei as the inventor of several styles at once, the Hwarang of the Silla kingdom as ancestors of a twentieth-century art. The Oshchepkov case runs the other way, and that is where its value lies: here the origin is documented, dated and covered by examination records — and was removed anyway.

The reason was not only political. To name him was to admit where the technique of the Soviet national sport had come from: Japan.

Origins and training

He was born on Sakhalin, then a Russian penal colony, the son of a convict, and grew up an orphan. Twelve years later Russia lost the war against Japan; under the Treaty of Portsmouth of 1905 the south of the island passed to Japan and became Karafuto. Oshchepkov thus grew into a Japanese administration without changing address.

In 1911 he was sent to Japan to study and entered the Kodokan, where he trained under Jigoro Kano himself. Six years later he received the second dan, the first Russian ever to do so.

A birth date that circulates in two versions

Reference works give sometimes 1892, sometimes 7 January 1893. Both are the same date: the Russian Empire counted by the Julian calendar, which in the nineteenth century ran twelve days behind the Gregorian. 26 December 1892 Julian is 7 January 1893 Gregorian.

That is not a dispute but a conversion — though one you have to know about, or you read two contradictory statements and take one for an error. This encyclopedia’s Sambo article gives 1892 and is therefore not wrong but Julian.

What he built

Back in the Soviet Union, Oshchepkov taught first in Vladivostok and Novosibirsk, from 1929 in Moscow, finally at the State Central Institute of Physical Culture. It was there, with his students, that the work grew from which Sambo came.

His method was not to teach judo. It was to use judo as a frame and fill it with the wrestling styles of the Soviet peoples — Georgian, Tatar, Kazakh, Uzbek, Armenian. What worked in one of those styles and was missing from judo was added; what in judo hung on Japanese etiquette was dropped.

This construction explains two features Sambo carries to this day: the leg lock, which Kodokan judo had banished from its competition, and the absence of chokes in sport sambo. Both are decisions, not accidents.

In parallel and independently, Viktor Spiridonov worked on a self-defence system for the military and the militia — economical with force, because a bayonet wound had permanently impaired his left arm, and expressly not intended as a popular sport. The two lines ran alongside each other before they were merged.

1937

In October 1937 Oshchepkov was arrested. The charge was espionage for Japan — resting on exactly the biography that had qualified him for the sport: the years in Japan, the language, the connections.

The sources diverge on the circumstances of his death, and this article does not settle the contradiction:

AccountWhat it says
Most commonHe died about ten days after the arrest in Moscow’s Butyrka prison, officially of a heart attack
Widespread variantHe was taken to a Siberian prison and shot there

In favour of the first: it dominates the Russian-language accounts and carries a date — 10 October 1937. The second circulates mainly in Western summaries. What both share is that the official cause of death comes from an apparatus that in those months routinely issued false ones; a heart attack ten days after an arrest is not information but an entry.

In 1957 he was rehabilitated — in the same decade in which thousands of Great Purge verdicts were set aside.

The deletion, and why it had two motives

After the arrest, Oshchepkov’s name vanished from the account of the sport. His student Anatoly Kharlampiev (1906–1979) systematised the rules, pushed through recognition by the Soviet sports committee, and is to this day officially the “father of Sambo”.

The obvious reason is the political one: a man convicted as an enemy of the people could not be the founder of a national sport. But it is not the only one, and the second is the more interesting.

To name Oshchepkov was to admit the Japanese origin of the technique. Sambo was supposed to be a Soviet creation out of the wrestling styles of the Soviet peoples — not a rebuilt judo. A founder with a Kodokan dan and six years in Tokyo did not fit that account even if he had been politically untouched. The arrest supplied the occasion; the doctrine supplied the motive.

One observation follows that goes beyond the single case. Where this encyclopedia records invented ancestors, the point was almost always to give a young art some age — Hwarangdo reaches for warriors of the sixth century, Sibpalgi attaches itself to a printed manual of 1790. Here the opposite happens out of the same need: it is not origin that is added but the wrong origin that is removed. Both are interventions in the same question — where does this come from? — with the sign reversed.

What is established and what is not

Established: Kodokan training from 1911, second dan as the first Russian, teaching at the Moscow institute, arrest in October 1937, rehabilitation in 1957. These are records, not tradition.

Not established: the precise circumstances of his death (above) and the respective shares of Oshchepkov, Spiridonov and Kharlampiev in the finished system. On the latter, the attributions have been moved politically for decades, in both directions: first Oshchepkov was expunged, later Kharlampiev was in some accounts devalued just as one-sidedly. Anyone reading a clean allocation here is reading a position, not a finding.

The article therefore records only what can be dated — and that the question itself was contested.

  • Sambo — the art whose history was rewritten around him
  • Judo — the frame he brought with him, and the reason his name was inconvenient
  • Jigoro Kano — his teacher at the Kodokan
  • Bodhidharma — the opposite case: an origin that was added
  • Hwarangdo — the same need for age, the other direction
  • Sibpalgi — a genuine document attached to a foreign art
  • Catch Wrestling — the Western strand that runs inside Sambo
  • Greco-Roman Wrestling — the competitive frame in which Soviet wrestlers were trained
  • Shoot Wrestling — the Japanese parallel development of the same question
  • Luta Livre — the same construction on another continent
