Breathing Methods Compared — One Word for Two Jobs That Exclude Each Other

Breathing technique is meant to stiffen the trunk and calm you at once. It cannot do both — and that is where most explanations fall apart.

The two jobs exclude one another at any given moment: pressure requires a closed glottis and a very short exhalation, regulation an open one and a very long exhalation. To ask for both at once is to ask for the impossible — which is why the systems that take it seriously keep two kinds of breathing under two names.

The resonance band comes from research on slow-paced breathing: the baroreflex resonates at about 0.1 Hz, that is around six breaths per minute, with individual values between 4.5 and 7.0 — an exhalation longer than the inhalation further increases respiratory sinus arrhythmia (among others Laborde, S. et al. (2022), Psychophysiology 59(1): e13952). The pressure mechanism is documented in exercise science: exhaling against a closed glottis raises intra-abdominal pressure and thus trunk stiffness, while also markedly raising blood pressure. The assignment of the systems to the two jobs is an assessment of their training instructions, not a measurement — no comparative study of the breathing methods of several martial arts exists.

Overview

Hardly any subject in the martial arts is treated as often and as imprecisely as breathing. You are to breathe “from the belly”, “into the ground”, “through the tension”; you are to expel sharply on the strike and stay deep and calm while practising. Each of these instructions makes sense on its own. Together they are a muddle.

The reason is simple and is rarely stated: two entirely different jobs run under the word “breathing technique”, and at any given moment they demand opposite things.

This article sets the breathing methods of seven systems side by side: karate with its two kinds of breath, ibuki and nogare; kiai and the Chinese fasheng; qigong; systema; kyūdō — plus powerlifting as a control case for one job and judo/BJJ as a control case for what happens when nothing is regulated at all.

The thesis is:

Breath does two things in martial arts. First, pressure: it stiffens the trunk at the moment force is applied. Second, regulation: it lowers arousal. The first job requires a closed glottis and a very short exhalation, the second an open one and a very long exhalation. Both at once is physiologically impossible — and any instruction demanding it is therefore either imprecise or wrong.


Job one: pressure

When a person moves a heavy load or absorbs an impact, their trunk becomes the problem. The spine on its own is unstable; it needs guidance from outside.

The body solves this with a trick that exercise science has described well: exhaling against a closed glottis. Diaphragm, abdominal wall and back musculature contract together and raise intra-abdominal pressure. Abdominal and thoracic cavities become an almost rigid-walled cylinder that increases trunk stiffness and takes part of the load off the spine.

This is not martial arts lore but measured biomechanics. With heavy loads — above roughly 80 per cent of maximum voluntary effort — it even happens involuntarily; nobody lifts a maximal weight with an open glottis.

The price is well known and comes with it: blood pressure rises sharply. Which is why the manoeuvre is brief. It is an event, not a state.

Where this job appears in the martial arts: in kiai, in the Chinese fasheng of nanquan, in the boxer’s sharp expulsion at the moment of impact — and, in extended form, in the ibuki of karate.


Job two: regulation

The second job has nothing to do with force. It concerns the nervous system.

Here too the ground is well studied. Slow-paced breathing acts on the baroreflex, the loop that adjusts blood pressure from heartbeat to heartbeat. That loop has a resonance frequency at about 0.1 hertz — around six breaths per minute, individually between 4.5 and 7.0. Breathe at that pace and the natural fluctuation of heart rate with the breath is amplified: the heart speeds up on the inhalation and slows on the exhalation, and this swing becomes markedly larger.

Two practical conclusions are documented and immediately usable in training:

  • The exhalation must be longer than the inhalation. Precisely that ratio further increases the effect. It is not symbolism but the adjustable variable.
  • The pace lies far below resting breathing. That sits at about 12 to 16 breaths per minute; the resonance band lies at a third to a half of it.

Where this job appears: in qigong, in systema, in the nogare of karate — and in every instruction to stay calm.


Why both at once does not work

With that the thesis is already proved, and without appeal to any tradition:

A glottis cannot be open and closed at the same time. An exhalation cannot last a tenth of a second and eight seconds at once.

From this follows the practically most important sentence of this article: an instruction such as “breathe deeply and calmly, and tense everything at the moment of impact” is not wrong but incomplete. It describes two kinds of breathing that alternate, and fails to name the switch.

The systems that take this seriously do exactly that — they give the two kinds of breath two different names.


Karate: the textbook case

Gōjū-ryū separates the two jobs explicitly, and that separation is the best evidence for the thesis that the martial arts themselves supply.

Ibuki is the hard breath, defining for the kata Sanchin: inhale through the nose, then a powerful, audible exhalation through the mouth at the moment of the technique, with the trunk musculature engaged. That is the pressure job.

Nogare is the soft one: long, silent, open, for transitions and pauses. That is the regulation job.

One system, two words, two physiologies. Anyone who says merely “karate breathing” has suppressed half the subject.

And here, of all places, there is a real dispute that confirms the point: how far should the glottis be closed in ibuki? A number of teachers insist that ibuki is precisely not produced by narrowing the throat but by pressure from the abdomen with the passage open. A throat held too tightly closed is a recognised hazard in Sanchin practice — precisely because of the rise in blood pressure.

That dispute is not a sign of confusion. It is the sign that a real physiological limit is being negotiated: how much pressure is needed, and at what point does it become dangerous?


The other systems

Qigong goes entirely for regulation: very long, open exhalation, abdominal breathing, a pace that sits comfortably within the resonance band. That the measurable effects of slow breathing appear exactly where a centuries-old tradition prescribes precisely that pace is remarkable — and it is the point at which traditional practice fits physiology best.

Systema makes regulation its main subject. The principle is never to hold the breath under any circumstances, not under load, not in a grip, not in pain. That is a deliberate decision against the pressure job: never holding means forgoing intra-abdominal pressure and buying, in exchange, a nervous system that does not tip over. As a counter-design to ibuki, systema is particularly instructive.

Kyūdō is the most interesting case, because it orders both jobs in sequence. The breath is tied to the shooting sequence; the exhalation runs with the draw and the release. Here breath is not an aid but the metronome of the technique. This is possible at all only because no opponent disturbs the timing — which also shows why it does not work in a fight.

Powerlifting as a control case: there the pressure job is executed in pure form, with no regulatory intent and no tradition — simply because it cannot be done otherwise. That weightlifters and karateka, of entirely different provenance, perform the same manoeuvre argues that the task compels it rather than the doctrine.

Judo and BJJ as a second control case: there breathing is in practice not regulated. Not from negligence, but because the opponent sets the pace — pinned in a grip, you breathe when you can. What is striking is the consequence: conditioning replaces technique here. What is a breathing doctrine in other systems is, in grappling, simply endurance.


What this means for your own training

With every breathing instruction, ask which of the two jobs is meant. Almost every misunderstanding in this field dissolves at that point.

Separate the two in training. Pressure breathing belongs on equipment, on a partner, in strength work — brief, few repetitions. Regulatory breathing belongs in warm-up, cool-down and forms practice, with an exhalation clearly longer than the inhalation. Pack both into the same exercise and you get neither.

Use the ratio, not just the depth. “Breathe deeply” is half the advice. The effective part is that the exhalation lasts longer.

Take the blood pressure point seriously. Anyone with hypertension or cardiovascular conditions should discuss prolonged straining against a closed glottis with a doctor. That applies to Sanchin exactly as to heavy squats; martial arts provenance does not make the manoeuvre harmless.

Do not expect the breath to strike. Pressure breathing makes the trunk rigid so that the force generated arrives. It does not generate the force.


Common false conclusions

“Correct breathing makes the punch stronger.” It makes the transmission better by stiffening the trunk. The force comes from legs, hips and rotation. The breath is the clutch, not the engine.

“Ibuki is dangerous.” A throat held too tightly closed for too long is. The technique itself is an extended form of a manoeuvre every human performs anyway when lifting heavy things. The useful question is not whether but how long and how hard.

“Abdominal breathing is natural breathing.” Diaphragmatic breathing is the economical resting pattern, true. But the effect at issue in slow breathing depends on pace and on the ratio of exhalation to inhalation, not on which body part rises.

“The kiai is a battle cry.” It is first of all a pressure manoeuvre with an audible side effect. The intimidating effect comes on top; it is not the mechanism.

“Apply qigong breathing in sparring.” Six breaths a minute presupposes that nobody disturbs the timing. As soon as an opponent is present, they set the frequency. What remains is the habit of lengthening the breath again quickly after an exchange — and that is genuinely valuable.

“Breath is ki.” Two different levels. The vocabulary around ki, chi and prana orders experience; the mechanisms described here are measured. Both can be used side by side, as long as one is not offered as evidence for the other.


How far this comparison holds

Well documented are the two mechanisms. The effect of intra-abdominal pressure on trunk stiffness and the accompanying rise in blood pressure come from exercise and spinal biomechanics. The baroreflex resonance band at about 0.1 Hz, the individual range of 4.5 to 7.0 breaths per minute and the additional effect of a lengthened exhalation have been studied repeatedly in respiration and heart-rate-variability research.

Not documented is the transfer to fighting. None of these studies was carried out on martial artists, and none measures whether a particular breathing technique makes a difference in sparring, in competition or in a real altercation.

An assessment rather than a measurement is the assignment of the seven systems to the two jobs. It follows from their training instructions and is checkable, but it has not been surveyed. In particular, no physiological measurement series exists for ibuki and Sanchin — neither of intra-abdominal pressure nor of blood pressure during the kata. That would be the obvious study, precisely because safety is disputed in practice, and it does not exist.

The most interesting question stays open: whether long-term training of either kind of breathing measurably speeds recovery between efforts. It is plausible; for martial arts it has not been shown.
